Most Atlanta lifestyle pieces treat Vinings as a lunch stop between Buckhead and the Battery. That reading misses what August actually looks like here: a downhill road race turning thirty, a farmers market that runs from spring into fall, a shopping village quietly rotating its restaurant lineup, and four National Park Service trailheads inside a ten-minute drive of the clocktower.
If you live here, the month is denser than it appears. The point of this guide is to map that density in the order a resident would actually use it.
The one thing to know
The village square looks the same as it did a year ago. It isn't. Stockyard Burgers & Bones will shutter at the location to make way for sister concept Cotto Modern Italian, according to Tomorrow's News Today Atlanta. The new spot is expected to open by the end of 2026. Cotto Modern Italian, which has a location in Gainesville, serves pizza, pasta dishes and entrees such as Italian porterhouse steak.
That single swap changes the character of a corner residents pass every day. It also tells you something about the Jubilee's operating posture: the anchors are not fixed. Plan August around what is here now, and know which walls are about to be repainted.
August 8: the race that turns thirty
The clearest date on the Vinings calendar this month belongs to the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland. On August 8, 2026, runners, walkers, and spectators will gather for the 30th Anniversary of the Vinings Down Hill 5K Run for the Kids — three decades of community, fun, and fundraising for local children's charities.
The course is a residents' course, meaning the roads it uses are the ones you drive to pick up coffee. The Vinings Down Hill 5K course begins at the top of Mt. Wilkinson, winds around the Cumberland Mall area, and ends at the Lovett School (280-foot net drop). Despite the name of the race, well, it's "not quite" all down hill…there are 3 hills to climb throughout the race – at the half-mile mark, during the second mile and during the last half-mile. There are also 3 really amazing down hill sections that make up for those climbs!
A few practical notes for people whose front door sits on the course:
- Race window is 8:00 to 10:00 AM on 08/08/2026. Plan errands before or after that block.
- Families can join in the fun with the Kids 1K Fun Run and the beloved Doggie Dash & Costume Contest.
- The celebration continues with a lively post-race party at Vinings Jubilee, complete with awards, music, great food, and an engaging sponsor expo.
The origin story is worth knowing if you are new to the neighborhood. Founded in 1996 by Charles Heinz, a passionate Rotarian and visionary runner, the event has anchored the local summer calendar since the Clinton administration. Thirty years in the same three ZIP codes is unusual for an Atlanta road race.
Thursday afternoons at the Jubilee
The farmers market is the quiet backbone of the Vinings social week. Gather in Vinings every Thursday from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. and shop local goods from over 30 vendors. The market is located in the parking lot at the intersection of New Paces Ferry Road and the Jubilee driveway.
Two things residents tend to underweight:
- The season is longer than most Atlanta markets. Cobb County's own calendar lists Vinings Farmers Market – Vinings (Thursdays from late March through October), which means you have three more months of Thursday runs before it closes for the year.
- It is a weekday market. That is not an accident. It exists for people who live and work near the village, not for weekend tourists driving over from Buckhead.
If you have kids in a Cobb or Fulton school on a staggered fall schedule, the 2:30 start is close to pickup and gives you a real reason to slow down before dinner.

River miles before the heat
August in Vinings means you go to the river early or you do not go. The neighborhood sits on top of one of the densest concentrations of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area units in metro Atlanta.
The Smyrna Vinings area offers multiple park units in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. These include Paces Mill, Whitewater Creek, Indian Trail and Akers Mill in the Palisades section, as well as, Interstate North and Powers Island in the Cochran Shoals section of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
The four residents actually use:
Cochran Shoals. The default. Cochran Shoals is one of the most popular parks in metro Atlanta's Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Located just north of Atlanta's I-285 perimeter, this riverside park offers more than four miles of wide, level, gravel trails that fill with weekend packs of runners, walkers and mountain bikers. Best before 8:00 AM in August. Daylight only - Pay to park.
Powers Island. The escape from Cochran Shoals when the parking lot is a mess. The trail explores an island, an inlet, and the banks of the shoaling Chattahoochee River on a 2.5-mile trail loop near Vinings. It's the "other" trail at the Chattahoochee's angular, whitewater-filled Cochran Shoals. And yes, it's more than just overflow parking for its exceptionally popular trail neighbor, the Cochran Shoals Trail. In contrast to the broad trails at Cochran Shoals, the width of this trail is comparatively tight – so it's perfect for small hiking groups or single-file trail runs.
Paces Mill. The closest to the village. Paces Mill is located just north of the Chattahoochee River on Cobb Parkway and just south of Paces Mill Road. Paces Mill offers 3.5 miles of trails, a shaded picnic area, as well as plenty of places to wade fish or fish from shore.
Akers Mill. The one with the swim-adjacent moment. Akers Mill is located inside I-285 and just west of the Chattahoochee River and can be accessed by heading east on Akers Mill Road from Cobb Parkway, then turning right at the wooden mill wheel onto Akers Drive. Akers Mill offers several miles of trails and scenic spots including Sandy Point, a small beach-like area that juts into the river.
If you want the extended day, hike from Cochran Shoals to Sope Creek Park, following the side trail near the Columns Drive trailhead to a paper mill destroyed in the Civil War, a glassy pond, and a small, historic cemetery.
A sample Vinings weekend, August 8–9
For readers who prefer a scaffold, one way to string the month's best pieces together:
- Saturday 6:45 AM. Park at Columns Drive on Cochran Shoals. Walk or run the river loop before the 5K starts filling up the parking on the other side of the ridge.
- Saturday 8:00 AM. If you registered, you are at the top of Mt. Wilkinson. If you did not, you are on a Jubilee patio watching neighbors finish at Lovett.
- Saturday 10:00 AM. Post-race party at Vinings Jubilee. Coffee at Read Shop, pastries from Southern Baked Pie Co.
- Saturday evening. Dinner at HOBNOB or bartaco. Try Stockyard once more before the Cotto renovation closes it out later this year.
- Sunday morning. Paces Mill picnic tables with a market haul from the previous Thursday.
- Thursday 2:45 PM. Back at the farmers market. Repeat.

The takeaway is not that Vinings has a lot going on in August. Every Atlanta neighborhood claims that. The takeaway is that Vinings is small enough for one person to actually use all of it inside a weekend, and specific enough that the pieces are worth knowing by name. A 5K that has run through the same streets since 1996. A Thursday market that runs seven months a year. A restaurant lineup that is quietly rotating a marquee tenant. A river with four different front doors within a five-minute drive.
